Emily Berger
November’s Featured Artist
Artist Bio-
Emily Berger is a multi-discipline artist focusing on printmaking and small sculptures using wood and ceramic.
Her work, often inspired by the natural world and the animal kingdom, combines mediums to create interesting texture and layers. Her love for old-school techniques and detail is reiterated in her printmaking process. Each print is first hand-carved in wood or linoleum then multiplied by herself on a traditional press, making each print a true original. After printing, embellishments include chine-colle, hand sewing, and found objects. Emily enjoys employing both literary symbolism and metaphor to explore themes of love, loss, growth, and hope. She is currently a studio artist at McColl Center and works full-time managing a custom art framing shop. In her free time she enjoys curating exhibitions, cycling, hiking, travel, reading, and live music.
Artist Statement –
Birds Of A Feather is a collection of work that explores the universal emotions that occur when living through loss. Birds, their woodland companions, and mythical creatures are used to represent excerpts from a life story addressing divorce, difficult relationships, death, growth, and hope. The audience is asked to follow along as traditional printmaking and small sculpture are used to represent the more basic human conditions that connect us all. This body of work seeks to effectively communicate our most vulnerable feelings while providing a means for empathy,
inspiration, and guidance as we navigate our common experiences.
