Artist Bio:
Kathryn Hood (b. 1996) is an interdisciplinary artist who specializes in photography, mixed media, and fiber arts. Originally from Raleigh, North Carolina, she received a BFA in Photography and BA in Spanish from UNC Charlotte in 2020. Growing up in the South, Hood’s inspiration stems from not only her upbringing but also modern societal influences and how the two themes correlate. Her work discusses social, political, and cultural topics while utilizing the element of play to remind people to smile amid their struggles. With influences ranging from fine artists to down-home makers in varying design fields, Hood plans to pursue a MFA, pushing her themes, media, and process.
Artist Statement:
Porcelain Canvas II pairs women’s bodies with fine china to spark conversation about gender roles and social issues, especially within the Southeast. As the sequel to a self-portraiture series, this project confronts the male gaze and gives bodily agency back to women. Posture, choice of prop, and intentional concealing directs the viewer to consider topics such as women’s social identity, objectification, reproductive rights, mental illness, and racist ideals.
