Kaitlyn Fraser

December 2023’s Featured Artist

Artist BIO:

Kaitlyn is a local Charlotte artist who creates art to still moments, evoke memories, and share emotions. She wants to make you stop and notice not only what you see, but also what you feel when you look at her work. In her various collections you will find that she is often inspired by music, emotions, and places she has traveled. Some collections feature landscapes brought to life through the texture and drips of paint, while her most recent collection leans more towards the abstract and is inspired by the feelings and memories she has when listening to music.

Kaitlyn has created a unique process she uses to paint a song. First, she writes the lyrics of the song on the panel in charcoal. She then paints an abstract image overtop with water-based oil paints that is inspired by the emotion and imagery of the song. These paintings are often reminiscent of a place that a song takes her in her mind, recalling old memories. The charcoal words become blurred and barely visible, almost ghostly, and peak through the image.

Kaitlyn received her BFA in Art from Elon University. She has exhibited her work at Elon University, the Guild of Charlotte Artists shows, and other Charlotte galleries and shows. Kaitlyn also works as a mental health counselor, which ties in with the emotional side of her artwork. Artist STATEMENT:

In this collection, Kaitlyn Rae Fraser explores the link between music and visual art by creating paintings out of songs. Each piece begins with her writing the song lyrics in charcoal on a wooden panel. Kaitlyn then uses water-based oil paints to create an abstract image that captures the feeling of the song. These are often reminiscent of places she recalls from memories. The goal of this collection is to evoke the emotion of the song in a visual way.
